2022La Reyna Blanca Chardonnay
2022La Reyna Blanca Chardonnay
The 2022 vintage began with a cool and wet Spring with late snow events. There was some primary bud damage in some varieties in some vineyards. This lead to a delayed budbreak and bloom, behind historical averages by as much as 3-4 weeks depending on location. The cool weather remained through bloom. A mix of environmental and cultural practices lead to a heavy fruit set. Vigor and crop level both needed to be controlled with the season getting off to such a cool start. The heat finally came in late June and remained through August, helping to gain a few weeks back on the severely delayed vintage. Veraison was 2-3 weeks behind historical averages. The beautiful late Summer warmth continued well into Fall, creating absolutely ideal harvest conditions. Very little fruit was harvested in September and this created a condensed 2022 harvest in the month of October. Growers who significantly reduced yields were rewarded with some of the best quality fruit in a decade. The 2022 vintage has produced big fruit flavors and great natural acidity. The White wines are concentrated and highly aromatic. The red wines are structured and have intense flavors. This was a rare vintage where weather conditions permitted harvesting into the first week of November before the first big frost around November 8th. Quality was truly outstanding.
Tasting Notes
The 2022 La Reyna Blanca Chardonnay is goldenrod in the glass. Tropical aromatics of starfruit, citrus blossom, and banana muffin lead to flavors of orange oil, white peach, challah bread, and maldon salt. Full bodied with seamless balance the wine is both dense and weightless. The long finish is pure pleasure with orange cream, marshmallow, and hazelnut.
